[Border Mail]

A freight train derailed on the new Wodonga railway bypass Saturday morning. The northbound Pacific National train split in two about 8am.

Two wagons fell from the overpass south of the Lincoln Causeway, with their ends resting on the ground below. A Pacific National spokeswoman said an emergency response team was en route to the scene.

The driver was not believed to have been injured. Rail services between Melbourne and Sydney have been affected.

Freight train derails, major disruptions ahead

The Australian Rail Track Corporation’s Brad Emery says initial investigations suggest the derailment was caused by a problem with the train. “It appears that one of bogies on the 23rd wagon twisted and buckled, which caused it to fall of the rail, taking another 14 with it,” he said.

“There’s been extensive damage to the track. 550 concrete sleepers have to be replaced. “No-one was injured and it appears it will take ballpark 24 to 48 hours to restore the line.” Mr Emery says the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has quarantined the site.
