Charlie Rouse (1924-1988) can accurately be described as being celebrated for not being famous, having become firmly identified over many years as Thelonious Monk’s nearly-permanent sideman.
One purpose of Riverside Records’ Jazzland subsidiary was to attempt to focus attention on wrongfully overlooked artists, which made this meeting of the saxophonist and the label extremely appropriate.
Rouse is highly effective in a program that makes no references to his employer and features both Blue Mitchell and the too rarely heard pianist, Walter Bishop, Jr.
But unfortunately this album made no real dent in Rouse’s non-famous status.
