leave a comment »

A family was forced to call in the army during some spring cleaning in Victoria’s north-east.

Two hand grenades were found during a clean-out of a shed on a property at Carboor, near Myrtleford.

Army specialists found one of the grenades was safe enough to take back to their base but the other had to be detonated on the farm.

It is believed the grenades belonged to a family member who died 50 years ago. [ABC]

Fatal – Ettamogah

leave a comment »

73-year-old Wodonga man, Michael Sedgwick, has died after Thursday’s collision between his bicycle and a car, some 10km north of Albury.

About 9.10am the man was riding his bike with two other riders north along the Hume Freeway about 500 metres north of the Davey Road exit at Ettamogah when he collided with a car.

Police say, at this stage of inquiries into the accident, it appears that the cyclist may have been attempting to cross two lanes of the freeway prior to the collision.

The 73-year-old man was treated at the scene and taken to Albury Hospital suffering head and spinal injuries. He was airlifted to Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital where he died about 5am Friday.

The male driver of the car was uninjured in the incident.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.

A prison security crackdown has crime matriarch Judy Moran shoeless and shirty.

The woman accused of murdering her brother-in-law Desmond “Tuppence” Moran is angered at conditions in Victoria’s main women’s jail.

Mrs Moran said she had no shoes, not enough blankets and did not get her leukaemia medication until hours after it was due to be taken on Saturday.

A former veteran police detective said he felt no sympathy for Mrs Moran, a woman known for her love of the good life.

“At the end of the day, there’s no designer cells,” he added. [The Daily Telegraph]

Fatal Savernake

leave a comment »

A single vehicle accident on the Riverina Highway on Sunday night, has a claimed the life of a 49-year-old male driver of a Ford Falcon utility.

About 8.30pm police and emergency services were called to the accident at about 5kms east of Savernake after reports of a single car crash.

Police say inquiries into the crash continue, however, it appears that a Falcon ute which was heading west, left the road before crashing into a tree and bursting into flames. A passing male motorist stopped at the crash scene and pulled the male driver- and only occupant, from the burning car.

The motorist attempted CPR on the driver before the arrival of emergency services, however, the man died at the scene.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
