Corowa man granted criminal appeal over murder

[abc] A Corowa man who killed a young woman and buried her in a shallow grave has been granted a hearing at the New South Wales court of criminal appeal.

Ryan Chris Williams was sentenced to 21 years and nine months in jail after pleading guilty to murdering Shana Joy Wilkinson, 20, in 2009.

Williams strangled her and hit her with a shovel before burying her at a public reserve near the southern New South Wales town of Corowa.

He is now appealing his sentence and will appear in the Sydney-based court in June.

Two hours have been allocated to the hearing, with up to three judges possibly sitting.

Lemonade Stand

[video link]  AAP reports:

Only a few hundred people braved the wet weather in Sydney to hear Alethea Jones‘ name announced as the 2012 Tropfest (Sydney) winner and founder John Polson is now considering moving the date of the film festival to avoid February rains.

Jones, who hails from Victoria, won for her short film Lemonade Stand and hoped the win would lead to some more directing gigs.

“I registered for Centrelink two weeks ago, so maybe, maybe I might get a job this year as a director. Maybe. Just one job will be awesome,” she told AAP.

Second place was awarded to Boo by Rupert Reid, which also won the Telstra Crowd Pleaser, and third place went to Michael Noonan’s Photo Booth. … full aap article here.

The French breast implant scandal

[MeFi]  In March 2010, a pair of health inspectors responding to multiple tips paid a three-day visit to the factory headquarters of the Poly Implant Prothese (PIP) company, a leading international maker of breast implants. On their second day, the inspectors found something odd: six discarded plastic containers of Silopren, a liquid silicone designed for industrial, not medical use, lined up along the outside wall of the production site. The lead inspector estimated they had contained nearly 9 tons of liquid silicone. It now appears as if between 300,000 and 400,000 women throughout the world may have received potentially toxic, faulty breast implants containing ingredients never clinically tested on humans, manufactured and distributed by a company that knowingly deceived regulators, suppliers, distributors, medical professionals and ultimately, patients. Reuters photographer’s Blog: Operating on an implant scandal. (Last link NSFW, graphic images that contain nudity.)

PIP also sold chest and testicle implants for men which used the same non-medical, industrial grade silicone.

Coverage from CNNThe Guardian.

On February 7, 2012, BBC’s Newsnight program featured a Q&A between 25 women who had been implanted with PIP breast implants and Anne Milton, a health minister for the UK coalition government. Evidence had apparently been available that PIP implants were likely defective for several years, yet the NHS had chosen not to inform patients of potential warnings. Milton stated, “The evidence to date is that they [PIP implants] are not [dangerous].” Response editorial by Naomi Wolf. There have been multiple demonstrations in London.

Wikipedia’s page on the company has a decent breakdown of the continuing aftermath of the scandal.

Doctor Who: The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Daleks

Andrew Orton says, “as a few people have been asking, here’s a version of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Daleks, with a more-Peter Jones-y vocal. Tons of people offered their voices after seeing the original (here ) and so I thought I’d give it a pop.

Thanks to Mole – P. A. Smith, for his stunningly benevolent Peter Jonesiness.

I hope you like it”. [video link]
